His career has been defined by his long tenure at the legendary Claiborne Farm, where he played a pivotal role in stallion management, matings, and sales strategy for some of the most influential horses of the modern era. Raised in a family with deep racing roots, Bernie developed a sharp eye for pedigree, conformation, and long-term value—skills that earned him a reputation for excellence and consistency among breeders, owners, and fellow horsemen. Known for his calm demeanor, humility, and insight, he became a go-to advisor for many of the industry's top players. This year, Bernie took the next step in his career by launching his own bloodstock company, allowing him to focus more closely on personalized client services and mentorship. This move marks a new chapter not only for Bernie—but for his family as well. Now working alongside his son, Bernie Sams III, the duo is building a next-generation legacy rooted in experience, vision, and respect for the horse. Bernie Sams the III: is part of the next generation shaping the future of the Thoroughbred industry. Born and raised in the horse capital of the world Lexington, Kentucky, Bernie found his way into the sport at 17 and hasn’t looked back. From prepping yearlings at Brookstone and St. George Sales, to working the backside at Belmont and Saratoga for Christophe and Miguel Clement, his path has already spanned sales rings, shedrows, and international racing hubs. After time spent in Newmarket, England, working for trainer James Ferguson, Bernie returned stateside to intern with Fasig-Tipton and take on racetrack operations at Kentucky Downs. He recently graduated from Western Kentucky University with a degree in Business Management and is now preparing for his next adventure—spending the next year in Australia at Newgate Farm.
